• Hiking Trails

When hiking it should be remembered that the formations are composed primarily of soft and disintegrating sandstone or gypsum. Do not attempt to climb any rock formation or stray from clearly marked trails. Snakes are comparatively rare and most are harmless, but caution should always be exercised. Wear sun protection and carry plenty of water.

Maps and guides are not necessary to enjoy any of the trails, but are recommended for the Nature Trail.

Chimney Rock
From the front of Corral Block and behind Lower Pavilion and museums, cross arroyo, open gate and follow trail leading up the mountain. From the top there is an excellent view of the Piedra Lumbre basin. The most popular hike on the ranch and one everyone should make. A geological trail guide is available in the Trading Post and museums. Not difficult. Approximately 1.5 hours round trip.

Kitchen Mesa
(Cliffs above Dining Hall) Marked trail begins to the right just beyond Long House and Teepee Village. Difficult climb; no guide available. Approximately 3 hours round trip.

Ghost Ranch Nature Trail
Guide available in the Trading Post. Trail begins behind Convocation Hall. Follow signs and map in guide. Trail ends in front of Headquarters. Easy walk. Approximately 30 - 45 minutes.

Box Canyon (Rendezvous Basin)
Take road to Teepee Village; continue past hogans to upper irrigation pond (cars may be driven as far as Long House). Follow main canyon stream all the way to the end. Not difficult but involves climbing over rocks. Watch weather and stay alert for possible flash floods. Approximately 3 hours round trip.

Living Museum Nature Trail
Follow entrance road to the corner by the High Desert Research Farm; do not turn corner, but continue on dead end road. There is a chain across the road, just beyond the farm. The marked trail begins on the left approximately 500 yards from the chain. Follow the marker-stakes across desert and suspension bridge over Arroyo Seco. Guide is available in the Trading Post. Approximately 2 miles.
